CMSPT and DSP Requirement

One of these two tests is required to help SF State guide you to the most helpful first-year English courses.

If English is not your primary language, we strongly recommend you take the Composition for Multilingual Students Placement Test (CMSPT) instead of Directed Self-Placement (DSP).  The CMS Program is designed specifically for multilingual students, and is taught by professors trained in TESOL and Composition.  CMS classes fulfill your requirements for Written English and Oral Communication

Students completely fluent in English (verbal and written fluency) may opt to take the DSP instead, in consultation with staff.

For more information on the CMSPT and to register:  http://testing.sfsu.edu/tests/eslpt

If you have any questions concerning the CMSPT, please contact the English Department:  engdept@sfsu.edu or phone 1+415-338-2264.
