Health, Safety, and Security for Study Abroad
Our top priority is the health and safety of our students.
The health and safety of students is a top priority for SF State Abroad. Therefore, all students are required to purchase special health insurance for study abroad. Specific details will be provided at your student’s pre-departure orientation.
While security cannot be guaranteed here or abroad, SF State Abroad takes every reasonable step to keep students safe, including advising them on health and safety issues during orientation and providing additional resources in their orientation guides.
Students and parents are encouraged to read these materials as well as look at the U.S. Department of State’s Current Travel Warnings and the Department’s International Travel Information. We recommend that all students enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Furthermore, SF State Abroad adheres to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Warnings and may suspend, postpone, or cancel programs in countries or regions that have travel warnings issued.
As a precaution, discuss with your student his/her travel plans while abroad and any safety or behavior issues you are concerned about. You may want to arrange a way to communication while your student is abroad either through email, Skype, or phone. Please note that students, rather than SF State Abroad, will be able to provide you the best information on their health and safety while abroad. The Office works to support students throughout their study abroad experience, but may not be able to disclose information to you because of FERPA regulations. Please visit the FERPA section for parents for additional information.
