Change Degree Level: Bachelors to Masters

SF State students who wish to being a new program of study at SF State must request a “Change of Education Level” I-20. 

Typical situations when you will need a “Change of Education Level” I-20 are:
  • You have graduated from an Undergraduate program at SF State, and have been admitted to a Graduate program and at SF State
  • You have graduated from an Undergraduate program at SF State, and have been admitted to a Second Bachelor Program at SF State
  • You have graduated from an Graduate program at SF State, and have been admitted to a second Graduate Program at SF State
“Change of Education Level” I-20 are issued by Division of Graduate Studies.

Students who are on OPT

If you have decided to pursue a new degree program at SF State, you must contact Division of Graduate Studies at gradstudies@sfsu.edu and inform them that you have decided to pursue a new program of study at SF State and you need a Change of Education Level I-20.  
 
 
SCENARIO You must receive a change of degree level I-20.... Example
If your OPT ends before new program start date 1. Within 60 days of  OPT end date AND
2. Before new  program start date
John's OPT ends on July 15.  His new program start on August 24.  John chooses to receive his I-20 on July 20.   

July 20 is within 60 days of OPT end date, and before new program start date.
If your OPT ends after new program start date Before new program start date

John's OPT ends on September  15.  His new program start on August 24. 

John chooses to receive his I-20 on August 1.  He can work under OPT until August 23, the day before his new program starts.

Students who are not on OPT

Your new program at SF state must start right after your current program ends.  Please contact Division of Graduate Studies at gradstudies@sfsu.edu to request a Change of Education level I-20.  You must receive the I-20 before your new program start date.
 

After receiving the I-20

Once you receive the new I-20, be sure to check the program information on your new SF State I-20 to ensure it accurately reflects your new academic program and degree level at  SF State!
