All degree-seeking students, especially students studying at SF State on an F-1 visa, can and are encouraged to study abroad!
- Follow the Getting Started page and attend an information meeting.
- Then, contact your F-1 international student advisor to let them know you plan to study abroad remain in good standing at SF State while abroad.
F-1 students continue to pay international/out-of-state tuition to SF State while abroad.
The Office of International Programs places students in placeholder units (12 for SF State Exchange programs and 15 for CSU IP programs) while you are abroad. If you take additional units abroad, they will come back and appear on your transcript in Gateway. At that time, you will be retroactively charged additional tuition for those units.
While abroad, you will be required to purchase the SF State Abroad insurance through Risk Management instead of SF State's international insurance.
